Description

Wonderfully detailed huipil from the Nahualá region of Guatemala. This striking huipil measures 25 1/2″ across the shoulders, 25 1/2″ across the chest, and 22 1/2″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The head opening is square and measures 5″ x 5 1/2″ along the four sides. The sides have had the stitching removed so that the huipil opens completely. It can easily be restitched, creating arm holes for wearing.

This mostly cotton older huipil is striking with its detailed woven design in red with accents in blue, pink, orange, and green. The pattern is a geomorphic design of a woman weaving on a backstrap loom on the chest and back, with geomorphic figures across the shoulders. There is bleeding of the red color onto the light background cotton fabric, which is a desirable trait in the huipiles of this region. The technique is to intentionally let the color of the threads run onto the base fabric. It is said that this dates back to the use of expensive silk threads on the huipiles, which would lose some of the color and run, causing this stunning effect.

This beautiful huipil is in good used vintage condition with perhaps a few loose threads. There is some faint staining. There is open weaving along the lower edge, that is normal for this style. This is a fantastic textile perfect for wear or for display!
