Description

Wonderfully detailed huipil from the Nahualá region of Guatemala. This striking huipil measures 24 1/2″ across the shoulders, 25″ across the chest, and 22 1/2″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The head opening is somewhat circular and measures 5 1/2″ in diameter (very tight fit over average adult head). The sides have had the stitching removed so that the huipil opens completely. It can easily be restitched, creating arm holes for wearing.

This mostly cotton older huipil is striking with its detailed woven design in red with tiny accents in red, blue, and green. The pattern is of geomorphic figures throughout. There is bleeding of the red color onto the light background cotton fabric, which is a desirable trait in the huipiles of this region. The technique is to intentionally let the color of the threads run onto the base fabric. It is said that this dates back to the use of expensive silk threads on the huipiles, which would lose some of the color and run, causing this stunning effect.

This beautiful huipil is in good used vintage condition with perhaps a few loose threads. There are some faint darker stains in various parts of the huipil. This is a fantastic textile perfect for wear or for display!
