Description
Very large, classic huipil with beautiful weaving and striking embroidered accents! It is from the Quetzaltenango region of Guatemala (Frequently referred to as Xela). This bright huipil measures 31″ across the shoulders, and 34″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is round and measures 5″ in diameter with an additional 1 3/4″ tie-closed slit to aid in pulling over the head. The sides are stitched to create armholes.
This brightly colored huipil is accented around the collar with hand-guided, machine-done embroidery that features pink and red flowers. The woven background is done in a rainbow of colors. The weaving features geomorphic figures of birds, corn plants, zigzag rivers, and mayan stars. Where the panels join in this three panel huipil, there is a colorful ‘randa’ of hand sewn seams. The background fabric is a crisp woven white cotton. The neck and sleeve openings are trimmed in a soft velveteen. This is a soft but very heavy huipil!
This huipil is in great used condition, with little sign of wear, a few loose threads and slight wear in the design in a couple of places on the chest, and a faint stain in the lower, white cotton section. A wonderfully colorful textile for wear or display!
