Description

Very detailed vintage huipil from the village of San Juan Cotzal. This striking smaller huipil measures 25″ across the shoulders, 23.5″ across the chest, and 26″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is rectangular and measures 4″ x 4.75″ (very small, might need to cut neckline to fit over adult head). The sides have been stitched to create armholes.

This huipil features extensive and elaborate weaving of geomorphic figures that are representative for the area. There are many birds, deer, corn plants, and people woven throughout. The weaving is a rainbow of colors woven on a red and white horizontal striped background. The lower section under the designs is a fantastic raw (nubby) white and purple cotton. The collar has been trimmed with a purple fabric and accented with narrow colorful stitching. This is a very fully woven early design that shows a quality not often seen

This huipil is in very good used condition with little sign of wear, perhaps a few loose threads. There is a very slightly faded area on one side just under the collar and a 1.5″ square repair on one side of the chest on the other side. Perfect textile for display or wear!
