Description
Very stunning lake-blue embroidered huipil, full of birds!! It is from the town of Santiago Atitlán on the shores of Lake Atitlán. This striking huipil measures 29″ across the shoulders and 25″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is square and measures 7 1/2″ across over each of the four sides. The sides have been unstitched to allow the huipil to open completely, but can be easily resewn to create armholes
This huipil is absolutely beautiful with elaborate hand weaving that features row upon row of beautiful birds filling the bodice. There is some use of tiny metallic thread accents. The neckline and sleeve openings are accented with stunning hand embroidered flowers. The woven cotton background is light blue with stripes of deep navy. There is a strip of of commercial black fabric added to the bottom edges in order to add length to the huipil. Just amazing! This is a wonderful example of the incredibly beautiful huipiles of the Santiago Atitlán region.
This huipil is in excellent used condition, with no obvious sign of wear, perhaps a few loose threads.
