Lovely deep-green huipil full of hand embroidered birds!! It is from the town of Santiago Atitlán on the shores of Lake Atitlán. This striking huipil measures 27″ across the shoulders and 25 1/2″ across the chest* (*if tailored side stitching is removed, it can be opened to at least 6″-8″ more), and 28″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). The neck opening is rectangular and measures 6″ x 6 1/2″.
This huipil is absolutely beautiful with elaborate hand embroidery that features many large and beautiful birds filling the bodice. There is some use of tiny metallic thread accents. The sleeve openings are accented with stunning hand embroidered birds. The woven cotton background is dark charcoal-green with stripes of green. The randa where the two panels join in the center is stitched with crochet of beautiful flowers. There is a strip of of commercial black fabric added to the bottom edges in order to add length to the huipil. Just amazing! This is a wonderful example of the incredibly beautiful huipiles of the Santiago Atitlán region.
This huipil is in fair used condition, with some signs of wear, perhaps a few loose threads. There are light stains in some parts from what appears to be from splashes from bleach.
