Very stunning embroidered huipil, full of beautiful birds in a colorful garden! It is from the town of Santa Maria de Jesús. This striking huipil measures 24″ across the shoulders* and 22″ across the chest*, and 29″ from the neckline to the bottom edges (folded). This includes an extension of 6 1/2″ added to the bottom edge of the huipil to make it longer. The neck opening is rectangular and measures a very generous 7 1/2″ x 7 1/2″. The sides have been stitched to create armholes. *There is stitching that runs over the shoulders from front to back that makes this huipil more narrow. If this stitching is removed, it would add approximately 4″ to the width of this huipil.
This huipil is absolutely beautiful with brilliantly colored embroidery that features birds, flowers, and grapes on each side of the huipil in a flower garden, with a pair of lovely quetzal birds in the center. The colors are glowing jewel colors! The background is a black commercial fabric. The embroidery is all machine done free-hand, and is truly an art form. Just amazing! This is a wonderful example of the incredibly beautiful ‘fiesta’ huipiles of Santa Maria de Jesús.
This huipil is in very good used condition with little sign of wear, such as a few loose threads in the bodice embroidery. A truly exquisite textile!
